Sophie is a London-based professional singer with experience spanning opera, concert, choral, recording and session work.

Born in Sussex, she began her musical education as a chorister at St Bede’s School (now Bede’s) in Eastbourne and as a music scholar at Ardingly College. She gained her first operatic experience as a Gossip in Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, performing with The Operating Theatre at Brighton Dome in association with English Touring Opera. She went on to study at Trinity College of Music (now Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance), during which time she won a Choral Scholarship to St Martin-in-the-Fields. Alongside her principal study of classical voice, she also studied jazz vocals and piano as second-study instruments. She graduated with an Honours degree in Music, receiving First Class Honours for her final recital.

As a soloist, Sophie has performed the soprano solos in works including Pergolesi Stabat Mater, Fauré Requiem, Handel Messiah, Mozart Mass in C and Bernstein Chichester Psalms at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg.

Her extensive choral repertoire includes Elgar The Dream of Gerontius, Berlioz Grande Messe des morts, Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem, Handel Messiah, Rossini Stabat Mater, Holst The Planets, Beethoven Missa Solemnis and Symphony No. 9, Mahler Symphonies Nos. 2 and 8, Orff Carmina Burana, Ravel Daphnis et Chloé, Poulenc Sept Répons des Ténèbres, Walton Belshazzar’s Feast and Haydn The Creation. Her performances have taken her to venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Auditorium de Lyon, the Palau de la Música de València and Bath Abbey.

Sophie performed regularly with Opera Holland Park over seven seasons between 2008 and 2014, appearing as a chorus soprano in seventeen productions and playing Sprite in the European première of Tobias Picker’s Fantastic Mr Fox. She also contributed to the company’s outreach work in local communities. Other operatic and operetta credits include singing as a chorus soprano in Carmen for Ellen Kent Opera and solo roles with companies including OperaUpClose, West London Opera, Village Opera, Floral Opera, Morley Opera, British Youth Opera and Brent Opera.

Her operatic roles include Nedda in Pagliacci, Violetta in La Traviata, Frasquita in Carmen, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Despina in Così Fan Tutte, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, First Lady in The Magic Flute, Princess Ida in Princess Ida, Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard, Josephine in HMS Pinafore and the title role of Polly in John Gay’s Polly, performed at the Purcell Room. Her wider theatrical credits include the Street Singer (Narrator) in Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, Cinderella for Chaplins Touring Pantomime and co-narration of William Walton’s Façade in a staged performance with Tempus Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Stuart Morley.

Notable earlier concert performances include Berio’s Folk Songs, in which Sophie appeared as a featured soloist with the Trinity College of Music Contemporary Music Group, conducted by Gregory Rose. She also performed the world première of Jump, written specifically for her by Dai Fujikura for solo voice and saxophone quartet, with the Spiral Saxophone Quartet. Her performances of Alicia Ambrose’s works include Evensongs (for solo voice and an instrumental ensemble of harp, flute, clarinet, and bassoon) as part of the Park Lane Group Young Artists Concerts and Still (for three female voices and flute) at the Park Lane Group Young Composers Symposium. She subsequently performed Still at “Soundscapes” at the British Music Information Centre.

Sophie’s recording and broadcast work includes chorus soprano in Verdi’s Macbeth for Chandos with English National Opera, an appearance on Sky Arts television and live film-music performances of Gladiator and Amadeus LIVE. She also took part in the world première of Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the Royal Albert Hall and the world première of John Powell’s A Prussian Requiem.

Sophie has held permanent choir positions at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Soho Square and St Anselm & St Cæcilia, Lincoln’s Inn Fields. She was engaged through the Philharmonia Chorus Professional Singer Scheme from 2012 to 2019, performing in London and on extensive European tours, with appearances in Lille, Lyon, Valencia, Alicante, Hamburg and at the Rheingau Festival. She remains a member of the scheme.

Alongside her classical work, Sophie also performs jazz standards, swing-era favourites and French chansons in intimate settings around south-west London. Drawing on her musical training and love of a varied repertoire, these performances offer a relaxed, playful and more informal dimension to her work. She is also the founder of The Walblers, a female vocal trio specialising in close-harmony singing and a varied repertoire for special occasions.
